Karina Maria Cruz, age 33

Her home was in Concord, NC. She fell asleep in death on Thursday, November 5th, 2020 at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Karina had been chronically ill for a very long time and she succumbed to an intestinal obstruction and sepsis infection.

Karina’s life began on January 18th, 1987 in Miami, FL. Her parents are Marlon Miranda (father) and Ana Karina Jerez (mother). Karina had two younger brothers, Marlon Miranda Jr. and Bryan Miranda. She was an energetic child with a love of singing and dancing. She would easily smile and had the personality of a litter of puppies. She attended Southwest High School in Miami and went to college at Miami Dade College.

On February 21st, 2006 she eloped and got married to Dwayning Cruz in Miami, FL. She was fooled into thinking he was a kind and loving man. Soon after, she quickly went on to have two daughters. Our eldest, Monica Cruz, was born on August 14, 2007. Our second daughter, Elizabeth Cruz, was born on October 29, 2008. Her approach to motherhood was grounded in three things: Love, Affection and Faith.

Karina’s greatest accomplishment was the overabundance of hope and faith she showed in her most trying years. Starting in 2013, she started to suffer from neuropathic pain, weakness and fatigue. In 2014, she could no longer keep working secularly and her autoimmune condition began to affect several organs. She went on to have three colon surgeries and three on her pelvic floor and bladder and one for a baclofen pump. Her disease went on to negatively affect her neurological and digestive system, which in turn, severely limited her mobility and strength. Twice she had an obstruction, three time she had sepsis and dealt with a multitude of various infections. Years of physical and occupational therapy led to minimal improvement and she dealt with unbelievable, constant pain.

Nevertheless, I have never known of someone with more hope and faith than her. She had every reason to give up and yet, she didn’t. She had every reason to be sad and yet, she didn’t. She had every reason to curse God and yet, she didn’t. She was a Jehovah’s Witness and she believed in the promise of a future Paradise Earth. She felt safe knowing she was in Jehovah God’s memory. Her favorite verse was Revelations 21: 3,4. She would preach to ANY passing nurse, any doctor, any passing stranger about her faith. She served as an excellent example to her husband, to her children, and to anyone who knew her…... of how to face tribulation with joy and peace.

Karina Cruz is survived by her best friend and husband, Dwayning, her daughters, Monica and Elizabeth, her parents, Marlon and Ana Karina, and her younger brothers, Marlon and Bryan.

A few paragraphs don’t do her justice but it was an immense privilege to have her as my wife, to know her, love her and care for her. Thank you Jehovah God for this blessing.
